Cinda Thomas credits Alexander Technique with relieving 20 years of chronic neck and back pain in addition to teaching her how to live a life of calmness in today’s fast-paced society. Cinda decided to become an Alexander Technique teacher after her first Alexander Technique experience when simultaneously her neck and back pain momentarily subsided and her singing voice improved dramatically.

In 2001, Cinda graduated from the Alexander Alliance in Philadelphia, a three-year teacher training program. Her training in Philadelphia was primarily with Martha Hansen Fertman and Bruce Fertman, whose training and school is highly influenced by Marjorie L. Barstow (1899-1995), the first person to graduate from F.M. Alexander’s first training course. Ms. Barstow trained with F.M. Alexander in 1931-1934, eventually returning to her native Nebraska, developing her own method of teaching Alexander Technique - working with individuals in a group setting.

Following graduation Cinda became certified in 2002 with the Alexander Technique International. Interested in other teaching philosophies of the Technique, especially those of first-generation teachers, Cinda completed an advanced Alexander Technique teacher-training course in 2005 with John Nicholls in New York. This course, "The Carrington Way of Working,”was based on John Nicholls’ work as a former assistant to Walter Carrington (1915-2005), master teacher of the Technique, who also trained with F.M. Alexander. Cinda has also studied with Elisabeth Walker (b. 1914), who completed her training with F. M. Alexander in 1947. At 94, Elisabeth is still teaching today.

In addition to her Alexander Technique certification, Cinda holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. She has also earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Vocal Performance from The University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, and has an extensive performing and academic teaching background.

A voice teacher for 30 years, Cinda maintains a private voice studio, Viva Voce, in addition to her Alexander Technique studio, Mindful Living in Catonsville, Maryland. Her Alexander Technique students are individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and professions who want to relieve bodily tension, stress, pain, or discomfort to live a life with more ease and comfort.
